Five physicians and several other medical professionals volunteer at Arbuckle Medical Clinic on a regular basis.

Samaritan Care Christmas Meal Distribution

Through generous donations, City Mission was able to provide 50 full Christmas dinners to the working poor of the community on Thursday, December 18. Many families that we serve through Samaritan Care would not be able to provide a special Christmas dinner for their families otherwise.
The spirit of joy definitely filled the air of Samaritan Care! Outreach Case Manager Paul Smith had the opportunity to pray with some of the guests, and various City Mission staff from different departments helped serve the community.

It's a Safe Place to Get Help

Meet Charlie --he's a resident living in McCausland Shelter at City Mission. Through our programs and services, Charlie was able to get the assistance he needed to turn his life around, and he is grateful for each day of his rehabilitation journey.

"The Mission means help to me --that's the big thing," he said. "It's a safe place to get help. I had a year of bouncing from couch to couch, but my friends were doing alcohol and drugs. I've been clean one year on January 1."

The Women's Society of Holy Trinity National Catholic Church Donates

The Women's Society of Holy Trinity National Catholic Church recently organized a drive to collect toiletries and other essential hygiene items for the residents of City Mission. They also donated a large bag of homemade pierogies and presented a monetary gift. In addition, the youth of their church collected coats for our residents and community members who utilize our Samaritan Care Center. Pictured are Father Mark Swoger and the Women's Society members. Thank you, faithful and considerate donors of all ages!

In Honor of Her Father

In November, Stacey McMullen and Cassie Clayton (pictured right) called City Mission to see if they could volunteer in the kitchen on November 19. In speaking with Volunteer Manager Sue Gartland, Cassie and her mom Stacey revealed why they wanted to serve on this specific day: November 19 is the anniversary of the death of Cassie's father Matthew Clayton --- a long time community member who enjoyed eating in City Mission's Feed My Sheep Dinning Room for three years.

"This is the number one thing I wanted to do today to honor my father," Cassie said. She also spoke of how grateful she is that City Mission's Samaritan Care provided food bags and a warm winter jacket for her dad when he had very little.
"I wanted to serve at the Mission today to help myself deal with today, and I wanted to help someone that's in the same position he was in," she explained. "By helping him, the Mission gave me three more years with him, and I'm really grateful."
The City Mission staff feel truly blessed to be able to help Matthew and others like him in the community!

Avis Arbor Helps Homeless Women and Children

Did you know that our Avis Arbor Women and Children's Shelter houses 43 women and
children? Last year, City Mission assisted 220 women and 57 children, giving them
shelter, food, and medical assistance. We also provided the women with case management,
counseling, recovery classes and job-seeking assistance. At City Mission, we feel
honored to serve God through eliminating homelessness in the region...one life at

a time.

Veterans Day Service at City Mission 2014

For Veterans Day at City Mission, we held a special chapel service to honor our
residents and staff who served in the armed forces. Dr. Bob Scott, Wendy Barbeau and Dean Gartland led a beautiful service filled with prayer, guest speakers and great music.

Mike, one of our residents and a former US Marine, shared about his life in the
Marine Corps and told how his military service shaped his relationship with Christ.

Sue Gartland, singer, song writer and City Mission Volunteer Manager, shared an
original song, "Just Another Drop of Water." Sue wrote this beautiful song when

her youngest son was deployed in Iraq while serving in the US Marine Corps.

We have many veterans in the Mission and on staff. Here are a few who were able to attend our service on Tuesday.

Canon-McMillan Serves City Mission

In October, students from Canon McMillan High School's Family and Community Studies class came to serve a meal they had prepared for our Feed My Sheep Dining Room. Kim Johovich, a teacher in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, has been teaching this course for the past few years.

In one class segment that focuses on hunger in America, Kim's students prepare a meal and bring it to City Mission. She teaches the students to budget for the meal they prepare, assess the nutritional value and calculate the actual size of an individual serving. Then, the students prepare and serve the meal. Thank you, Canon McMillan students!

Holy Cow!

We'd like to send a heartfelt "thank you!" to Noble Energy for their huge donation of beef this week. Last year we served over 92,000 meals (15,000 more than 2013), so a gift like this will go far toward feeding the hungry this winter! Pictured here are Noble Energy's Stacey Brodak and City Mission Food Service Manager, Judy Sandy.

Thank you Noble Energy!

Birthdays for City Mission

Sarah Powell wanted to celebrate her 11th birthday a little differently this year!As she put it, "I wanted to do something for the people that don't have as much stuff as I do!"
To celebrate her special day, Sarah threw a pool party and asked her friends to pitch in for the residents at City Mission.Together they collected bags of toiletries, some toys and lots of canned food! How great to see a younger generation stepping up and out of their comfort zones to extend a helping hand to those in need! Thank you Sarah and friends for helping end homelessness one life at a time!Note: Sarah's mom said that, for her birthday, she wants to do something good for others, too!
